A new concept for thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail is taking advantage of Amazon Lockers to order resupplies of their food and supplies.

Located along the trail, these lockers provide an easy and convenient way for hikers to restock without carrying heavy packages for hundreds of miles.

What Are Amazon Lockers and How Do They Work?

Amazon has added locker locations to drop packages for people to pick up securely. They aren’t available in all places, and many may be inside buildings, but they can give you a solid delivery location while on the trail.

This makes them much easier to pick up than ship something home to have family or friends relay it to you on the trail. These lockers are secure; only the person with the pickup code can access them.

They aren’t like post office boxes in that they don’t give you a key, and you get an electronic PIN code that grants one-time access to your locker.

Benefits of Amazon Lockers for Thru-Hiker Resupply

There are many benefits to a Prime subscription, but these are a few key reasons why it makes sense for a thru-hiker to look at a Prime subscription as a valuable cost for the year on the trail and afterward.

The ability to get items shipped to the now far more common Amazon lockers means that you can pick up your resupply without worrying about it being lost in the mail or stolen if you have to mail something ahead.

Amazon has next-day or two-day delivery for nearly everything, in my experience. You can have a resupply of just about anything delivered in a day or two, depending on where you are.

This makes replacing a gear item or similar much less expensive in many cases than a local gear shop for planned items, like shoes.

Wide Range of Goods

There is almost any gear and food item out there for sale on amazon, and thru-hikers have to eat just like anyone else, so why not add more to resupply with a more straightforward pickup coming into town?

It makes sense to have a lighter-weight alternative shipped ahead in heavy gear to save on pack weight.

We all know things on the trail end up having a hiker tax applied to them, like instead of 10 cent ramen, it’s $1. Purchasing these in bulk on faster delivery could save a lot in the end.
